1000 mile March and Covid-19

Because of the extreme seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of our events have been postponed or cancelled however, the ex-servicemen and women we support still need our support and their challenges cannot simply be delayed. We are extremely grateful and humbled by the extraordinary efforts that so many are making on our behalf during this difficult time. Please make sure to follow Government guidelines on exercise and social distancing to stay safe while fundraising. 

What do I do now?

Start walking - now is a perfect time to start. By investing in yourself you will start to feel better and better. You may make new friends and see yourself in print perhaps through your fundraising and feel a giddy glee; you smile a bit more, sleep a bit better. You get complimented, get a badge for the first time since you were six and enjoy rain. The best bit – you will change lives.

Make sure you look after your own safety by dressing appropriately for all weather conditions, telling somone where you are going and have a torch, high viz vest etc. if you are walking at night time.

Am I too late to start?

It’s never too late to start as this is an ongoing challenge. You will need to walk an average of 2.74 miles a day in 12 months but the good news is that most people will walk more than this a couple of times a week or at the weekend.  It really is up to you how you would like to complete your 1,000 miles by Armed Forces Day 2021 or you can extend it to 2022 and onwards.

Do I need to submit/upload my miles anywhere?

Not at all. The main thing is you keep track of them yourself – and the best way is either by using the Strava or Fitbitt apps. You can also download our Progress Tracker poster.  Most importantly is to share your progress on your fundraising page by syncing Strava or Fitbit with your fundraising page or adding regular updates.

What Miles can I count towards my total?

All of them. Most will count all the miles they do that they wouldn’t have done before – and whether it’s in your lunch break, skipping the bus, round the block or in the country it all adds up. Some will count only the miles they cover with walking boots on – that's what people mean when they refer to 'boots on' miles. It's up to you.

How do I pay in money raised? 

You can pay money in however suits you:

Cheques (inc CAF) - Addressed to Walking With The Wounded. Write your name and #1000MileMarch on the back and send it to: Katie Dagless, WWTW, Stody Hall Barns, Stody, Melton Constable, Norfolk NR24 2ED.

WWTW charity bank account - If you need to make a money transfer please use: Sort Code: 20-30-81 Account Number: 33616436. Make sure you use the reference 1000MM and your name.

Don’t forget to send in any cash as soon as you can so we can add this to your 1000 Mile March page so your friends can see your good work and nudge you up the leaderboard too. Whilst we try to encourage all donations to be made online your profile page, we realise this isn't possible for everybody. So there’s a form available for people to download and print in order to send in cash donations... Don’t worry it’s all very straightforward.

Where does the money go?

The money raised by the 1000 Mile March funds Walking With The Wounded's programmes supporting veterans with mental health issues, who are homelessness, unemployed or socially isolated to get back into society, work and independence.

There are inevitable costs to run a campaign, which is why the event is kindly sponsored by our supporting partners. We strive to keep these costs as low as we can to maximise the impact for the veterans we support.

We're proud that currently 82p in every £1 raised is spent delivering our programmes, 1p is retained for future use and 17p is spent on income generation and governance to achieve the next £1 and ensure we put the client first in how we run our programmes. What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a great opportunity for donors to make their voluntary donations to the campaign worth 25% more – without spending an extra penny. It enables charities like ours to claim the basic tax that donors have paid on their donations back from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). If every supporter agreed to Gift Aid it would raise hundreds of thousands of pounds more to support men and women who served.

Am I eligible to Gift Aid my donation?

To be eligible to add Gift Aid to your donation you must be a UK tax payer and you must have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for the current tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that you donate to will reclaim on my gifts for the current tax year. Other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. The charity will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that you have given.
